Dear David,

Over the past year I’ve had many déjà vu moments and this week is no exception. On Monday 19th October 09 Panorama aired a programme showing the racist abuse suffered by two Asian undercover reporters living on an estate in Bristol. While the reporters were shocked by the abuse they endured for me such abuse was a normal part of London life in the 1970s and 80s.

Just as in 1979 I sat with my family to watch the party political broadcast by the National Front, so too I will watch Prime Minister's Question Time this Thursday evening to hear what Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party has to say.

When I started work with the London Baptist Association some ministers told me that racism was no longer an issue, but the truth is that racist mindset, attitudes and practices can resurface at any time and racists can exploit difficult economic and social circumstances to their advantage.

Back in 1979 my family and I were petrified as we watched and heard the National Front’s propaganda. But this Thursday as I watch I will be praying to the Lord of diversity who breaks every barrier down and makes us one in Christ. I invite you to join with me and to pray along the following lines:
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (Mth. 5: 44-45)
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. (Rom. 12: 14)
  • Pray that the Lord God will bless Nick Griffin and his family.
  • Pray that the Son of God will set free Nick Griffin, his family and his closest aides.
  • Pray that Nick Griffin will have a Damascus Road experience. This has happened to a prominent member of the Klu Klux Klan.
  • Pray that those watching will have their ears opened to the truth so that they are not led astray by lies and half truths.
  • Ask the Lord to forgive us, the church, for our failure to hear and address the needs of the white working class, which the BNP are now exploiting.

Blessings,
